[Review] GENKI I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese

The Genki series is one of the most popular Japanese textbook series out on the market today. Throughout the two-part series you learn about Mary, an exchange student in Japan, her friends, host family and the real life experiences you might face if you go to Japan. It's used in many schools around the world and it's also great if you want to self-study Japanese. I consider this a great beginner book because it teaches you everything from how to read hiragana, katakana and even basic kanji! There is a dialogue and a vocabulary list at the beginning of every chapter along with an accompanying CD. There are many example sentences using the grammar you have just learned and you get many chances to practice with the questions that follow the grammar lesson.

The structure of the book looks like this:

1)Dialogue,
2)Vocabulary list
3)Grammar
4)Practice
5)Culture lesson(if you have the updated version.)

The series also has a workbook that goes along with the textbook to help you practice even more.

My rating of this book:

★★★★☆

=Great for beginners
=Develop writing, speaking, listening skills
=Great introduction to grammar
